								<title>Executive Director - Ascender (Pittsburgh) | Ascender</title>
								<guid isPermaLink="true">https://www.pghcareerconnector.com/jobs/rss/22253488/executive-director-ascender-pittsburgh</guid>
								<description>Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, About Ascender
Ascender is Pittsburgh&#8217;s cross-sector entrepreneur community: a coworking space, founder hub, and programming organization serving 300 community members annually. We sit at a rare intersection: tech founders, Main Street business owners, service entrepreneurs, and everyone in between, working side by side every day. Ascender operates a coworking and programming space in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. We offer a variety of resources, including coworking space, business mentorship, educational programming, access to experts, and more, to Ascender members and program participants.
Our theory of change is simple but powerful: peer relationships create opportunity. In our entrepreneurial community, customers are introduced, problems are solved, and trust is built. No other organization in Pittsburgh deliberately occupies this cross-sector space in this way, and we&#8217;re committed to being the bridge between the tech and small-business economies for the long term.
What further distinguishes Ascender is its deeply inclusive approach, which prioritizes cross-sector and cross-class connection as a driver of both individual success and regional economic mobility. Ascender&#8217;s Bootcamp and Incubation programs consistently attract and support historically excluded founders.
 About the Opportunity
Ascender&#8217;s departing leader has been with the organization for more than seven years, growing it into a trusted, vibrant institution. The next leader inherits a strong foundation including a healthy organizational culture and leadership team, a clear theory of change, active funder relationships, and a community of engaged entrepreneurs.
Ascender is in an important moment of organizational evolution. Although foundation support will always be a major source of funding for Ascender, the Board of Directors is strategically committed to transitioning to a financial model more focused on revenue earned through membership, programming, and other partnerships.&#xa0; Our goal is to build toward 175&#8211;200 members and significantly increase earned revenue by the end of 2027. Our next executive director will lead that charge.

<description>Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Senior AI Software Engineer &#8211; Alpha Lab
Empower LTC Pharmacies. Save Lives. Build the Future of Healthcare Technology.
 About Softwriters
Softwriters develops innovative IT solutions that empower long?term care (LTC) pharmacies to deliver life?saving medications more efficiently and accurately. As a voted top workplace in Pittsburgh, we combine meaningful work with a collaborative culture where your contributions directly impact patient care.
As a market leader in long?term care pharmacy technology, we continue to invest in teams that explore new ideas quickly&#8212;while maintaining the rigor required in a highly regulated healthcare environment. Our people and culture are our differentiator, and our mission is at the center of everything we build.
Location: Hybrid &#8211; Pittsburgh, PA (Core office days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) Reports to: Director, Product Operations and Execution
 The Opportunity
This isn&#8217;t a role where AI is just a buzzword on a roadmap &#8212; it&#8217;s central to what we&#8217;re building. Alpha Lab is our innovation engine: a focused team responsible for rapidly designing, prototyping, and validating the next generation of product capabilities. You&#8217;ll be one of the engineers shaping how we build AI here &#8212; influencing architecture decisions, setting engineering standards, and turning early-stage ideas into working software that reaches real users.
Our products span cloud-hosted services, on?prem applications, mobile platforms, and hybrid data environments, which means the design space is wide and the problems are genuinely varied.
If you&#8217;ve shipped production software, have experience applying AI to real workflows, and thrive in environments where the problem isn&#8217;t fully defined yet &#8212; this role was built for you. You&#8217;ll help take ideas from early concept through to validated, shippable handoff, partnering closely with Core Engineering as successful experiments transition forward.
 What You&#8217;ll Own

Design, build, and iterate on AI?enabled product experiences &#8212; including LLM integrations, multi?step agentic workflows, and on?device AI capabilities &#8212; built with the engineering rigor and production thinking needed for real?world deployment
Implement application?layer patterns for AI features: orchestration, tool use, context handling, fallbacks, and latency optimization &#8212; the hard parts that make AI reliable in real workflows
Rapidly prototype new product concepts, translating ambiguous hypotheses into working software with measurable outcomes
Evaluate AI feature readiness across quality, reliability, cost, latency, and operational supportability &#8212; and advocate clearly for what&#8217;s ready to move forward
Build with compliance in mind from day one: privacy, auditability, and data handling are foundational in a regulated healthcare environment
Drive engineering quality through clean, well?tested code, thoughtful refactoring, and strong design and architecture reviews
Mentor teammates through code reviews, pairing, and technical discussions &#8212; raising the bar for the entire team
Stay current on emerging AI and application engineering techniques and bring relevant learnings back to Alpha Lab

 What You&#8217;ll Bring
 The experience that matters most:

A track record of delivering and supporting production software at scale &#8212; the kind of experience that tells you what breaks, why, and how to prevent it (typically 7+ years)

We welcome candidates across experience levels who bring strong engineering fundamentals and relevant hands?on experience. Final title, scope, and level will be aligned to an individual&#8217;s skills, experience, and demonstrated impact.

Hands?on experience implementing AI?enabled features in real workflows, including practical ownership of reliability, guardrails, failure modes, monitoring, latency, and cost
Deep familiarity with at least one of the following ecosystems:

 .NET / C#
JavaScript / TypeScript (React, Angular, Node.js)
 Mobile (iOS, Android, React Native)

Experience delivering software in regulated environments &#8212; healthcare, finance, defense, or similar &#8212; where security, privacy, and auditability are non?negotiable
Strong software engineering fundamentals: you write maintainable, testable, high?quality code as a matter of habit
Comfort working independently and collaboratively in fast?moving, iterative environments where priorities evolve and ambiguity is the norm
Bachelor&#8217;s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent professional experience

 Even Better If You Have

Experience with AI implementation techniques such as LLM integrations (Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Bedrock), RAG and vector search, or agentic workflow orchestration
Background in pharmacy, long?term care, or adjacent healthcare domains
Experience with on?device or edge?capable applications (mobile, embedded, offline?first environments)
Cloud?native development experience, particularly on Azure &#8212; including containerized services and serverless architectures
Familiarity with regulated?friendly design patterns: least privilege, encryption in transit and at rest, audit logging, and data minimization
Experience implementing observability practices: structured logging, metrics, tracing, and dashboards
Time spent in an innovation lab, R&#38;D team, or incubator environment where success is measured by validated learning and rapid delivery

 Why Alpha Lab
Most engineering roles ask you to execute on a defined spec. Alpha Lab asks you to help define what gets built &#8212; and then build it. You&#8217;ll work at the intersection of modern AI capabilities and real?world healthcare constraints, where the problems are genuinely hard, the work matters, and the learning curve never flattens.
We&#8217;re early in building this team, which means the decisions you make now will shape how we work for years to come.
 Why You&#8217;ll Love Working Here
 Meaningful Work:
Your work directly impacts patient safety and the future of pharmacy technology across the healthcare system.

This is not a &#8220;ticket-only&#8221; VM administration role. We are seeking a strategic engineer who understands the VMware ecosystem end-to-end, can plan upgrades, lead remediation efforts, and help shape the long-term direction of the virtualization platform. While some VM provisioning is required, the primary focus is infrastructure optimization, modernization, and lifecycle management of the VMware software stack.
 Responsibilities

Administer and maintain a large VMware environment consisting of ~100 ESXi hosts
Perform upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management across the VMware software stack
Lead remediation efforts for security findings, including validation of vulnerabilities and proper documentation of false positives
Plan and execute VMware version upgrades with minimal downtime and strong rollback strategies
Support and optimize VMware Aria (vRealize/Aria Operations) and VMware replication technologies (vRep)
Evaluate infrastructure health and provide strategic recommendations for platform improvements
Participate in data center initiatives including capacity planning, performance tuning, and architecture reviews
Collaborate with Windows Server teams to ensure seamless integration of virtual infrastructure
Document processes, configurations, and remediation steps in alignment with compliance standards
Assist with occasional VM builds and infrastructure provisioning as needed

 Qualifications

5+ years of hands-on experience administering VMware environments
Strong experience managing ESXi hosts and vCenter in enterprise-scale environments
Experience performing VMware upgrades, patching, and stack remediation
Familiarity with VMware Aria (formerly vRealize) suite
Experience with replication technologies (vRep or similar tools)
Strong understanding of security patching, vulnerability management, and documentation best practices
Experience operating within Windows Server environments
Ability to analyze alerts and properly document remediation steps, including validation of false positives
Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills

 Preferred Experience

Experience supporting 50+ host enterprise environments
Experience developing VMware roadmap strategy and long-term infrastructure planning
Exposure to data center modernization initiatives
Familiarity with storage, networking, and backup integrations within VMware
 VMware certifications (VCP, VCAP, etc.)

 Next Steps
No C2C, relocation, or sponsorship for this role.
